North Star Manganese

The Emily Manganese Project is located in the Emily District of the historic Cuyuna Iron Range, in northern Crow Wing County. The United States has limited mineable manganese resources, with most U.S. manganese deposits having grades below 5% manganese. The Emily deposit is the only High-Grade manganese deposit in the United States with high grade zones in excess of 40% manganese.

About the Project

Manganese is a critical mineral essential to iron & steel, ferro-alloys, and battery production. The fastest growing demand segment for manganese is for High Purity Manganese Chemicals (HPMC), critical components of Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) and Lithium Iron Phosphate (L[M]FP) batteries, with demand projected to increase by over 600% between 2025 and 2040.

Globally, the largest manganese reserves are in South Africa, Australia, and Gabon, and most of world supplies comes from these and near-by countries. The high-purity manganese chemical market is dominated by China, controlling +95% of global refined manganese chemicals and metals. Since the 1970s, there has been no manganese ore mined in the United States, and the U.S. has been 100% import-reliant on manganese ores, metals, and chemicals. Future ore from the Emily Deposit would feed a domestic manganese chemical plant producing high-purity chemicals and metals for U.S. markets and consumers.

The North Star Manganese Project is designed as a fully domestic, closed-loop mine-to-high-grade chemical project that advances national defense and energy security through critical minerals development and reduces U.S. reliance on foreign imports. North Star Manganese has recently completed a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) of the Project. The PEA demonstrates the technical and economic viability of the Emily Manganese Project. The Company is now focusing on environmental data collection, review and compliance, and optimizing the chemical processing stages of the future operation.
